Karl Morgan of Surrey, British Columbia, was a student of Joe Becker, the carver of this spindle whorl. Morgan explains his way of giving back to his community through his art: “My way of giving back is to teach the next generation so that there is not one carver but eventually there might be 20 carvers on the reserve, and they all have a high skill level to take the Coast Salish style to another level...It means everything to me. You know, when I first started out as a young guy, I didn’t carve until I was 16. You know I didn’t touch a blade until I was 16 and, and I didn’t learn the Native style; but I was always an artist.”
